Cowes is the most northern town on the Isle of Wight. Split into two by the mouth of the River Medina, the west side - “Cowes” - and the eastern side - “East Cowes” - are connected by a floating bridge. Both sides are soaked in maritime heritage, and offer large marinas which make them attractive for sailing all year round. The world’s largest sailing regatta, “Cowes Week”, is held here annually during the first week of August, and many other sailing events take place during the year. Sailing and fishing trips, diving and other water activities are all available for visitors to try out. Both sides of town have award-winning beaches, with wonderful views across the Solent.
Cowes is a vibrant place for shopping, with boutiques, gift shops and nautical stores. When it comes to eating out, there is a range of different cuisines on offer in the many restaurants, cafes and pubs, from ice-creams by the marina and Indian takeaways to fresh, locally-sourced produce.
Attractions in the area include: Cowes Maritime Museum; The Isle of Wight Military History Museum; Northwood House, an early-Victorian listed house; The Classic Boat Museum; and The East Cowes Heritage Centre. Just outside of East Cowes is one of the most popular attractions on the Isle of Wight: Queen Victoria’s former residence, Osborne House.
Cowes marks the start of the Isle of Wight Coastal Path, and the town is also seen as the gateway to the rest of the Isle of Wight. This means that many of the island’s visitor attractions are within reach.
Southampton and Cowes are connected by passenger and vehicle ferries, as well as by a high-speed catamaran, the “Red Jet”.
